Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

By Mike Toth

I've known Wilf Roch for the greater part of my being in London. He is a man of quiet dignity, deep faith, and tireless servitude to the King. As a mature believer and evangelist Wilf is often found having a coffee encouraging a brother in Christ or discussing the faith with a future believer. He also cooks wonderful meals for West Park church's numerous outreach and fellowship events.

We live in a time with almost unprecedented confusion in the faith. Pluralism is diluting Christianity, the culture is infecting it, and dead legalism is anesthetising it. Christians recoil from the charges of hypocrisy, intolerance, and ignorance.

My friend Wilf has written a commitment to walk with God. In this troubled and troubling time it is an excellent reminder of who we are and what we are to look like. As well, with so many outside forces tearing churches and brothers apart it is an excellent tool to help make sure we can walk together when strife comes:

"Now that I am a child of God through faith in my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, I will cherish every blessing of the present and future. My heart is a tablet for God to write His Word upon. May He anoint my mind to bring His truth into view and anoint my hands to fulfill this commitment.

My Lord invited me to come without money and without price, and drink fully of the water of life. Since I have done this by faith, I have become a fountain of His fullness. Out of me shall flow “rivers of living water” (John 7:38). God promised in His Word that “before you call upon Me, I will answer you, while you are yet speaking, I will hear” (Isaiah 65:24). If I rest in this truth and believe God will hear before I speak, and answer while I’m yet calling on His name, then surely He can put it in my heart to forgive even before I’ve been offended, to dissipate enmity before experiencing the assault of the enemy, to love when there’s no reason to love, give before being asked, to bless another before He’s a friend, and to make decisions throughout my life without self-serving motives.

I acknowledge that I am one, who has been purchased by the blood of Christ and, as God’s vessel, do not belong to myself. I want to become a channel through which God’s love can flow. Blessed with the treasures of biblical wisdom, the riches of the spiritual world and all the material things that God has laid in His hands, I’ll freely share without covetousness or sense of possession.

I will do nothing to make another indebted to me. I have freely received and will freely give (Matthew 10:8). I will not be a channel for Satan, and my defences against him will be fortified only by the grace of God. In the face of temptation, I shall strive to keep my spirit pure. I will not compete with or excel over my brother. In response to God’s forgiving example I will release-forever-past grudges that have festered, and retain only what God teaches me through them.

I will be a giver before I possess. I will be a forgiver before I am offended. I will be a servant before demands are laid upon me. I recognize that all this can only become reality in my life as I choose to reject every natural human reaction to life, and instead, instantly, respond to every Word that God by His Spirit speaks to my heart.

To help me remain firm in my commitment I have adopted this little proverb of the kingdom: To be "instant in season," I must be an instant overcomer. When I am smitten in my heart by the Spirit for choosing that which is not Christ, I am determined to be an instant repenter and thus become and instant overcomer. "Grant, Lord, that my heart shall respond swiftly to Your Word through the promptings of Your Spirit so I shall overcome the assault of the enemy. I am a Christian. I am a believer. I am a child of God. I am destined for glory!"

Wilf is the author of "Singled Out," the story of his unlikely salvation and the faithfulness of God to him and his family in the subsequent years. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the book you can reach Wilf at
