Karla knows what it means to belong. She is a helpful and friendly woman who lived in a Christian Horizons home as a young adult. Over the next few years, Karla’s independence and maturity grew as she gained confidence and learned new skills.

"I learned the whole bus route. I would take the bus to day supports and back every day, to Bible study, my parents' and most of my doctor's appointments," she said.

Two years ago, Karla was ready to move into her own place and wanted to be closer to her parents.

"I found out that a spot was opening in the basement of [a home with supported independence] and I would be moving there," she explained.

Karla is now very active in her new community and enjoys helping others. She leads the "Horizons Sound" bell choir, with frequent practices and local performances. She visits with people living at a nearby Community Living home, helping them read, play games and make crafts. She walks a dog for a friend and she volunteers at the local hospital, assisting day surgery patients to their cars.

Christian Horizons vision is to see people with exceptional needs belong to communities in which their God-given gifts are valued and respected. Christian Horizons empowers people with exceptional needs, enabling them to embrace their God-given potential and enjoy hope and opportunity in everyday living. We believe everyone has a unique purpose and unique gifts to share. We support people through residential, vocational, educational and recreational programs, in the London area and across Ontario, that empower people to have full and meaningful lives and help them to realize their gifts and abilities.

This year Christian Horizons celebrates its 50th anniversary - its Jubilee year. Christian Horizons has grown from a camping ministry for children with developmental disabilities to a non-profit, faith-based charitable organization serving almost two thousand families in Canada, and tens of thousands around the world through Christian Horizons Global.

As we look forward celebrating at our Jubilee grand finale on December 3, 2015 (the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities), we are grateful for God’s abundant blessing on our organization and the many partners who have supported our ministry throughout the years. We value our relationships with persons with disabilities, families, government, other service providers, churches and faith communities, educational institutions, businesses, employers, individual donors and the global community – anyone who has a vision to see communities of belonging become a reality in the lives of those with exceptional needs.

Christian Horizons is grateful for the opportunity to support Karla in her daily life as she interacts with her community - where she truly belongs.
