Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

By Darlene L. Turner

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." — James 4:10 (NIV)

In today's me society, how do we humble ourselves when everyone around us is only thinking about themselves and what they can do to stay on top? How do we minister to people when they're constantly thinking of me, me, me?

Mission Impossible, right? Most might think this, but not the ministries of the Booth Brothers and Youth for Christ. When asked what gives them inspiration to carry through their calling, Michael Booth said, "What keeps me going is a fulfillment of seeing the word penetrate people's hearts." But it hasn't always been that way. Michael mentioned that if most ministries were brutally honest, they would confess that in the beginning they just loved to sing and enjoyed the travelling. "But after awhile and so many miles when some of that fru-fru wears off, you begin to pay attention to the lyrics a lot more."

This award-winning group not only pays attention to the lyrics, but they listen to the people. Jim Brady said when picking their music they, "talk to the people and try to listen to see what they're going through and what they need." They hear their stories and "pick songs that connect and help them—on an everyday and real level."

The Youth for Christ ministry also listens by offering their support to the teens in their areas. Donna Woods of YFC in North Perth states, "When you sit back and realize how many youth we have contact with throughout a week and how much they are supported by staff members and volunteers, we are excited they are hearing and learning of the love of Christ. Who would do it and make those connections and provide that support, encouragement and mentoring if we weren't there?" Good question. This ministry is grounded on humbling themselves and being good stewards. Reaching lost teens in a me society. What could be more unselfish?

With any ministry comes different challenges. What is the biggest hurdle these ministries face? For the Booth Brothers, it is balancing their ministry with their families' needs. Jim shares, "Our families are extremely important. If we don't make our families a priority, we would not be able to do what we do." Donna states YFC's biggest challenges are funding and "staying current with what kids are dealing with on a daily basis." How can we help?

Proceeds go to the Youth for Christ ministry. Come on out and enjoy the harmony-drenched vocals of the Booth Brothers: Ronnie and Michael Booth and Jim Brady.

What is a typical Booth concert? Lots of variety—deep-southern gospel, contemporary, country, and even a little 'glow worm' music. Michael will throw in lots of humour to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. However, most importantly their focus is on God. In Ronnie Booth's words, "Everything is for the Lord. You’re not being spiritual just going to church. Every day—every moment of your life when you live it before the Lord you're being spiritual. That’s the way I look at it." Well said!

These two ministries have one mission: to reach groups of all ages for Christ. To share their faith through music, acts of kindness, and just being real so others will see there’s more to this world than trying to stay ahead and being number one. In Jim's words, "our focus is to help them for eternity." Is their mission possible or impossible?

With their humble hearts focused on God—definitely possible!

Let's follow their examples and choose to accept the mission to share our faith through the talents God has given us.
