Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

By Mike Toth

Romans 10: 13-15: …for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?  How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”

In the middle of September Christians in London and many surrounding areas put their feet into action delivering the Why book to 90,000 homes. This was the culmination of 2 years of prayer and logistical planning, and the continuation of a 42-year-old vision.

In 1975 George Derksen was inspired by a sermon by HH Barber on the impact of the printed word on society. The road Derksen took to the first published “Why Am I On This Earth?” book in 1986 is a book in and of itself, but suffice to say, the hand of God was on the venture from the beginning. The books are filled with the testimony of God’s grace, goodness, and salvation unique to the local areas in which they are distributed. London’s Why books are no different, and a total of 1.3 million of them have been distributed throughout the years.

The road to London started several years ago when the Why team felt God’s direction to come to London. After much prayer Derksen and Ann Wiens, who spearheaded the Why team in London, called local lay leaders Mike and Onalee Mitchell to ask them to co-chair the campaign. Unbeknownst to the Why team the Mitchells had been crying out to the Lord for revival in the city and the strategy to reach the lost.

For the last two years both local and national Why teams have been praying for the 90,000 targeted residences, engaging and encouraging churches and individual believers, and planning the logistics of delivering a book to each address prayed for. A warehouse to store the books had to be arranged, maps had to be printed and marked, books had to be put individually into gift bags and then 20 loaded into each shopping bag for delivery. Routes were broken up into approximately 50 residence clusters.

There were some immediate results from the book delivery. Former businessman Don Hill reported that there were 6 new people at his church on the Sunday after delivery due to the Why book. One lady and her daughter who were delivering books heard what they thought was a cat crying instead found out that the noise was an elderly lady who had fallen out of her wheelchair three hours before and couldn’t get up. They got help from a neighbor to get her back into her chair and arranged to meet with her another time; a new friendship was born.

Truth be told, it is hard to predict the impact the book will have, so soon after delivery. The timing is certainly Divine as the citywide Alpha initiative started only two weeks after the Why delivery, but the book will be impacting people in London and the area for a long time. The book has obviously had a huge impact on cities, churches, and people in previous campaigns: 50,000 of the 90,000 books delivered in London and area were purchased by churches and individuals across Canada and in cities that have already hosted the Why campaign. Each book costs $10 to produce and represents a $500,000 investment made into our city.

Mike Mitchell’s passion to have unchurched and unconvinced people come to the Lord is obvious, and infectious. “We have a harvest-loving God, the time is short, and the church needs to be awake and doing everything we can to bring in God’s harvest.”

“People feel insignificant,” says Wiens. “I believe in Ephesians 3:20 (“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,...”), that He is able. When we show people how they can pray they catch the vision and become powerful members of the team.”

“I thought I knew what kind of exciting life I wanted to lead, but following God has been more than I imagined.” “It is about vision and encounter,” says Onalee Mitchell. “God gives a vision, and provides encounters with other believers whose testimonies pave the way for God to arise and do it again. The WHY Encounter has brought a fresh revelation of Jesus Christ to this city.”

First God used a Sunday sermon to give vision to one person, and since has brought thousands of believers alongside in the unified vision of bringing the Gospel to the lost. These are ordinary people involved in an extraordinary effort on behalf of the only Saviour, Jesus Christ, and shows that although we may be ordinary, He is not.
