On Wednesday, November 15, The Salvation Army of London presents the 6th annual Hope in the City Breakfast to bring together London’s business community for an important cause: creating hope in the City of London. This year’s Keynote Speaker is known as the face of the monstrous Fort McMurray wildfires. Celebrated as a national hero—Darby Allen is an example of selfless courage and level-headedness under pressure.

As we’ve witnessed over the past few months, disaster can strike at any time. Some of our very own officers from the Ontario Great Lakes Division assisted those affected by both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Major Roxzena Hayden (London) and Captain Nyree Bond (St. Thomas) helped to provide thousands of meals for first responders and survivors, along with emotional and spiritual care in the weeks that followed the devastation in Houston, Florida and Mexico.

“You just feel for those places. I tend to worry about the countries that are less fortunate than us,” says Allen. “We were lucky to have the resources, like The Salvation Army, to help us.”

In spring 2016, Allen spearheaded the evacuation of the city’s entire population while the rest of the world watched. Throughout the ensuing weeks of operations, he worked tirelessly with first responders and volunteers, who came from across the nation (and globe) to assist.

“I’ve never met a more caring and compassionate bunch of people, and also selfless,” says Allen. “It’s all about how can they help everybody else. It brings a tear to my eye every time I think about them. I could never thank The Salvation Army enough for what they did for us. They’re all very special to me. I’m thankful and excited that I can come and speak in London.” Allen’s updates to the media were not only a means of reliable information, but a source of optimism—he provided calm reassurance as the lead spokesperson throughout the rescue efforts.

Returning as Master of Ceremonies is well-known local radio personality Steve Garrison.

This breakfast event provides an opportunity for attendees to network with like-minded community and business leaders, to learn about the support opportunities available and how they can collaborate with The Salvation Army in bringing vital services to people in need in London and area.
