The Love Story that Captured a Nation’s Heart

Joey and Rory Feek were enjoying a steadily growing fan base in country music when Joey was diagnosed unexpectedly with a rapidly spreading cancer. This vibrant and beautiful young woman would soon be on a unique journey for which no one is ever fully prepared. Her husband, Rory, and children, Heidi, Hopie, and Indiana, were beside her each step of the way. Rory, a prolific songwriter, entrepreneur, farmer, and overall tender man, has seen God bless his life in countless unexpected ways and had started a blog,, not really knowing its purpose other than he needed to write. That purpose soon became clearer when Joey’s cancer battle hit.

By inviting so many into the final months of Joey’s life, this astounding couple captured the hearts of millions with their powerful love story, the manner in which they were handling the diagnosis, and the inspiring simple way they had chosen to live their lives.

In this vulnerable book, Rory takes us into his own challenging life story and shows what can happen when God brings both his presence and the right companion into our lives. He also gives never-before-revealed details on what he calls “the long goodbye,” the blessing of being able to know that life is going to end and taking advantage of it. Feek shows how we all are actually there already and how we can learn to live that way every day. He then goes into detail toward the end of the book on what it’s like to try to move on with your life once you’ve “had it all.”

With short chapters this book just flowed. When it seemed like it was going to get too emotional it was the end of the chapter & a different part of the story began. One of the most raw stories I've ever read of faith & true love. Inspiring & beautiful.

I really like Joey and Rory's music and I've been a follower of Rory's blog, "This Life I Live" for a while. So, I was quite excited when I found his book. Overall, I would say that this is a good book. I did find some aspects to be slow and kind of boring. But, the slow points get better and ultimately tie in beautifully with Rory's overall message: do the best with what God gave you and love every minute of it. Rory's book, like his blog, are sincere and heartfelt - there were moments where I felt like he was speaking right to me at my kitchen table. This book does make you think about God's blessings - not only in their lives, but in yours as well. For that message in particular, I am grateful.

Could not put this book down.

I connected to this book on almost every level. It was actually a little frightening at times just how much I could relate to his story. I remember when Joey was very sick and everyone was sharing their story on Facebook & holding prayer vigils. It broke my heart for this beautiful young family whose life and family had really just begun, but They chose to have faith in Him and use what little time they did have to touch the lives of millions around the world while making the most of the precious time they have together, loving and serving one another.

How courageous and brave to put such a personal heartbreaking story out into the world, but it's also a story that everyone needs to hear of perseverance, Gods love, trust, the power of prayer and being a true overcomer which Rory Feek is in every sense of the word from his troubled childhood, searching for love in all the wrong places and losing the love of his life, Rory still chooses to see the beauty and magic this world and life have to offer while choosing to share his journey and try to help others who are in similar situations.

A few life lessons I will remember from this book: Live life for today as tomorrow isn't promised. Choose love and joy, you may never know the impact you have on someone's day. Your husband and wife are a gift. Choose to love and serve one another. Try to always look at the silver lining and the big picture, as Rory would say the small things are what matters.

This book is one of the greatest love stories I've read. Yet, it's also one of the most powerful testimonies of faith ever written; and beautifully written by the man who lived it, Rory Feek.

I learned about Joey and Rory Feek from a Facebook post by the country singer, Gene Watson.

Gene was asking for prayers for Joey who was diagnosed with cancer. It was there I learned of Rory's blog, This Life I Live, which I immediately subscribed to and began reading the story that touched perhaps millions of lives. And now, Rory's book tells us the complete story: their lives before God bringing them together, how He joined two separate paths into one which became one of Nashville's favorite duets. And we're all blessed by Rory's sharing the courage, hope and faith, both Joey and Rory exhibited, while fighting terminal cancer. I believe, like Rory, that this story was inspired by God, that He chose Rory to write it, and gave him the skills to be an inspiration, not only to believers, but to all who read it.
