What makes a ministry or business a great place to work? According to Media Corp, publishers of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, employers are judged on the following: Physical workplace, work atmosphere and social, health, financial, and family benefits, vacation and time off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement. World Vision has made the Top 100 Employers list for the last 7 years straight.

Lest you think that the award is simply an automatic marketing tool World Vision didn’t make it the first year they applied. They started the process because although they felt they treated their employees well, they wanted to reach outside of the organization to see how they stacked up with others and to learn best practices. World Vision was good in many areas, but didn’t measure up yet in others. They saw this as an opportunity to become an even better employer.

“Our faith influences every thing we do (at World Vision),” says Jan Kincaid, Director of People and Culture. “We are not just another charity.”

For 2016 World Vision rates anywhere from a B+ to an A in all of the above mentioned categories. They are a very family friendly organization offering flexible work weeks, work from home options, and even compressed work weeks leading to extra time off. They are a leader in maternity/paternity leave and with a Christian specific Employee Assistance Program (EAP) supporting the entire family. The EAP assists families through financial, legal trauma and crisis counselling. World Vision is especially sensitive to the trauma that employees can suffer through working in the field as they minister to children in some of the world’s most vulnerable places, including South Sudan.

World Vision is also innovative in their approach to work opportunities for employees. There are many educational opportunities for staff that the ministry reimburses for, and even offer secondments to the field for those who have normally worked at home in Canada.

“There is a sign on the wall as you are leaving that says, ‘You made a difference in the world today.’ It’s easy to be excited about the work at World Vision,” Kincaid says.
