Tips For Reading And Understanding The Bible

It’s that time of the year again when you’ll see people with big smiles standing beside big Kettles. The Salvation Army Kettle drive started November 18 and runs until Christmas Eve.

The Kettle Drive began in 1891 in San Francisco, California and has been running in Canada for 126 years. The Kettles are out in over 50 locations in London plus at the occasional corporate event.

While the Kettles are a unique marketing tool and have become a part of the Christmas culture, their presence around town is also a sombre reminder of the vital work that the Salvation Army is engaged in all year long. The funds that are collected through the Kettle Campaign are instrumental in funding the Community and Family service programs including Christmas hampers and toys for children, the Salvation Army Food Bank and Housing Stability Bank. These programs provide vital support to families and individuals in London who are in need.

Typical of the volunteers you meet at the Kettle locations are a couple of friends who have been with the Kettle program for 8 years. They started out by doing personal fundraising Christmas parties for the Salvation Army, but wanted to do more.

“I’m a people person,” says Christine, “and we needed something more to do. My father was in the Canadian Army in England and he used to tell me about all the things the Salvation Army would do for the troops.”

Christine and James stand at a kettle every day throughout the five and a half week campaign. Although James is a little more reserved than Christine, his smile is as warm and genuine and they are excellent ambassadors for the both the Kettle program and by proxy, the disadvantaged of London.

The only two things you need to volunteer is a willingness to help and a smile. Click HERE or HERE or call (519) 433-6106 for more information.
