Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

By Ray Alary, President of TWR Canada

I arrived in Manila about 1AM local time after nearly 30 hours of travel and layovers. I was tired. I was in Manila to attend the Global Diaspora Forum with fellow-Londoner and TWR Canada missionary, McDaniel Phillips. This event brings over 500 ministries and leaders together to reach, disciple and plant churches among people living away from their country of birth.

We were there to share about TWR Canada's new ministry Discipleship Essentials - a free online library of video, audio, and written content focused on discipleship and developing leaders.

In the taxi, all I want to do is sit in silence and nap, but I always make a point to start a conversation with the taxi driver wherever I am.

I ask the driver about where he is spiritually. I ask questions, he responds, and in those few short minutes of time we’ve become friends - sort of. I can't pronounce the name of the hotel, so I reluctantly show the driver the hotel reservation on my phone. He smiles and nods.

At the hotel, I pay the driver and give him a small tip. He did his job well and was helpful. There’s a mix up with my reservation (these things happen when you cross the International Date Line) so by the time I get to my room it’s almost 3AM. The first thing I always do when I travel is call my wife. I reach into my pocket. Where's my phone?

The taxi.

An app installed on my phone confirms it's in Manila. Not very helpful. The hotel staff are wonderful, they are helpful, but they are not hopeful. Cell phones don't get returned in Manila, they said.

Everything is on that phone! Wide awake, I ran through the things I had done to try and solve this problem when I realized I’d forgotten to pray. I asked the Lord to help me; help me find my phone, protect the information, and help me sleep. The sleep comes first.

I don’t know for sure how long I slept for -- maybe an hour, when the front desk called me. I go downstairs and there is my friend, the taxi driver, with my cell phone.

He said, "You are my friend. You left your phone in my taxi, and I am returning it."

I hug the man I'm so grateful. The hotel staff cannot believe it.

A few years ago I decided that I would be a light wherever I went because God's Word says, "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:16.

People observe our actions more then they listen to our words. Being a light and remembering that God is in the business of working things out according to His will has reaped many great rewards – my returned cell phone is among the least of them.
