"Therapy isn't a quick fix. It's a journey - and one where you do a lot of work. But I will help you make that journey..."- Roberta Teahen

Roberta Teahen is a Registered Social Worker, practicing psychotherapy, working with clients aged 16 and up. She is also a certified trauma specialist, a cognitive behaviour therapist and a certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist.

Roberta has a Bachelor of Social Work from King's University College, University of Western Ontario, as well as a Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. She is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, the Ontario Association of Social Workers and is a member of EMDR Canada.

Roberta began her practice over 25 years ago providing therapy for individuals, couples and families.

What is Psychotherapy? As defined by the Ontario Society of Psychotherapist; Psychotherapy addresses personal difficulties. It allows an individual, a family, a couple, to talk openly and confidentially about their concerns and feelings with a trained professional. Almost all types of psychotherapy involve developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating a dialogue and working to overcome problematic thoughts or behaviours.

It is an accepted fact that most people will face an extreme emotional or psychological challenge at some point in their lives. Many will manage just fine on their own; others may need to reach out for professional help.

Roberta has built her practice on helping with those difficult journeys. In the safe, comforting, professional and confidential environment Roberta provides the support and guidance needed to work towards a healthier, more productive and fulfilling life. Once Roberta and the client determine a clear understanding of the desired “destination” the work begins.

Roberta sees each client as unique individuals with their own personal needs for healing. Her Psychotherapy is a valuable tool for identifying, understanding and changing self-defeating behaviour. It focuses on encouraging and guiding individuals so they are able to gain insight into themselves and make choices that will foster growth and produce healthy, lasting changes. This kind of therapy engages the entire person.

The process of the therapy provides the increased confidence and greater self-knowledge to overcome self-defeating thoughts. Results also include, new effective problem solving skills & healthy coping strategies leading to stronger interpersonal relationships.

Isn't this all just counselling? Counselling involves offering constructive advice to clients about specific actions that they could take to improve a specific situation. Psychotherapy examines and supports the entire person - the internal thoughts and feelings that help form an overall sense of self. By examining and understanding these thoughts and feelings, motivations and attitudes, choices then become an individual’s own personal decision.

"The hardest part is helping clients learn to trust themselves," says Roberta, "Trust in self, belief in self, respect of self, self-acceptance - these are the four pillars of self."
