At Christian Life in London we love history especially history of our great city. In this piece, we take you back to 1952...

1952 was a big year in London as 2,000 telephones were changed to the dial system and the Lord Mayor of London, England, came to the city to open Western Fair. Over 1 million in Debentures was authorized for Fanshawe Dam construction.

Also in 1952, Canada won the Hockey Gold Medal at the Oslo Olympics (and the Leafs did not win the Stanley Cup).

That same year Ken Orr opened a clothing cleaning business. Soon after opening, he hired Helen Garner. Ken and Helen worked together adding employees and modernizing their equipment until Ken passed away in 1983.

Orr Cleaners had been Helen's life for the past 30 years and she could not see herself doing something else so she bought the business from the Orr family.

While it carries the Orr name to this day, it has be a Garner family business for the last 32 years. In 1989, Helen's daughter and husband took over, expanding its services and opening Orr Laundromat and Cleaning Depot in Strathroy.

In 2006 the torch was passed on to the next generation as daughter Shelly (Clair) stepped in, purchased the business and is the Company President.

"Service is key to our success," says Shelly, "But the success also comes from the number of services we offer. We clean things that others won’t even attempt. If it's cleanable, we will figure it out."

Shelly also explained that while their business has the reputation as a community focused family run business they are much more than just the neighbourhood cleaners for suits and dresses. Now included in the their specialized services is the cleaning of all types of gowns including beaded and silk, cleaning and sanitization of drapery, comforters and Duvets and they will even clean your Ugg boots! In addition to cleaning they do custom tailoring on premises.

A growing segment of the Orr Cleaners business comes from the small to medium size business, specifically doctor's offices, veterinary clinics, massage therapists, catering services, rental houses and the list is growing.

Isn't it great to read about businesses that date back 60 plus years and are still going and growing? For locations and hours of all Orr Cleaner locations as well as pick up - drop off locations, click HERE to visit the Orr Cleaner's website.
