Canada's premier Christian vocal talent competition won by Leamington's 14 year old Taylor Meloche. Taylor wins the $35,000 prize package including studio sessions, photo shoot, 1000 CDs, website, music video, publicity, tour support, and radio promotion! Dan White of London was second runner up and receives a $1,500 prize package, and 18 year old Tika Peacock third.

More than 50 Christian solo vocal talents entered the 6th Shining Start Contest. Semi-finalists were selected from the preliminary contests in London and Waterloo. 10 finalists were selected for the finals on May 3 at Kitchener's Grandview Baptist Church.

Taylor Meloche, a Grade 9 student at Leamington District Secondary School, blew judges away and presented that 'shining star quality' they were looking for in the $35,000 grand prize winner. "This is what I love to do, this is what I want to be doing for the rest of my life, and I want to share my passion with everyone and anyone willing to listen," says Meloche.

Dan Taylor, a bachelor, works at Teen Challenge Farm in London, Ontario teaching young men struggling to free themselves from a life of addiction. He's grown up playing music most of his life, and says his parents are his heroes. "Most of my songs are birthed out of experiences I've had with God. Those experiences help make the music come alive. If the judges can see the pictures I get to paint with my words, my job is done." Dan's vocal, instrumental and song writing talents offered judges the complete package they were looking for.

Fort Erie's Tika Peacock has overcome amazing obstacles to find success so early in life. The judges felt that Tika's voice talent deserved recognition and during deliberation created a third runner up prize of a song produced by AME Recording Studio. "This is what I feel God has called me to do. This contest has definitely been a great experience. I'm learning to connect with the audience, push myself out of my comfort zones, carry on even when I feel like I can’t continue."

Next year, organizers are hoping to expand the Shining Star contest to a national level. Watch for Taylor, Dan and Tika to release songs this fall, and for more information about the next Shining Star Competition.
