Experience Another World Without Leaving Yours

By Darlene L. Turner

"Attention kids! As principal of this school, I have decided that we're no longer going to call our concert a Christmas concert. It will now be HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA."

Miss Sanderson's jaw dropped. "What?" "That's right - Holiday Extravaganza. I've had complaints from some parents that we talk about Christmas too much. We have to be more sensitive. So, no more songs about baby Jesus."

Miss Sanderson stepped closer and lowered her voice. "You're kidding. But, that's why we celebrate Christmas."

"Nope. You can't say that word. It's HOLIDAY."

The above story is taken from a Christmas play I wrote called "The Reason," but sadly it's true in our schools and workplaces today.

It's time for me to get on my soapbox and talk about a pet peeve I have. What is happening in our world? Everywhere you go, it's Happy Holidays. Concerts are changing in schools, you can't call it a "Christmas lunch" in the workplace, and clerks are told they can't say "Merry Christmas." It will "offend" someone. Isn't that sad?

When I was a girl, it was always about the birth of Christ in our schools. Yes, Santa was thrown in there too, but at least we could talk about it without being reprimanded. It breaks my heart. Isn't Christ the reason we celebrate? It used to be!

How sad Jesus must be with the way the world is right now. He was born in a lowly stable among animals, died a brutal death for us, and this is how we treat Him?

Aren't you getting tired of it? I am. It's time we took a stand and started yelling "MERRY CHRISTMAS" from the top of our lungs. Yes, even if it isn't “politically correct."

Will you join me this year and keep CHRIST in your Christmas?

Say it with me--nice and loud.

Luke 2:6 (The Message)

While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel.
