London Area Ministries Welcome Power Equipment Donation

By Robin Saylor

With three kids under five years old Danielle knows the cost of diapers these days. She carefully calculates that diapers alone can take over $100 from her already limited monthly budget. The average box of diapers costs around $30, a container of wipes is approximately $5, and a large package of toilet paper comes in at about $15. It all adds up and there’s no way around it. That is where a generous donation from Kimberly Clark and a few volunteers from Connections Community Church come in to lend a hand.

On May 8, 2012 a large transport truck pulled in to the parking lot of the Connections ministry centre and dropped off 11 large pallets full of diapers, wipes, toilet paper, paper towel, Depends, Kleenex, tampons, and pads. The Kimberly Clark company distributes these products to retailers around Canada, but when pallets are damaged or products are discontinued they get rerouted to be donated and distributed throughout the city.

Volunteers at Connections church contact social service agencies in London and invite them to come to the ministry centre and take what they need for their clients. Agencies such as Women’s Community House, Merrymount, CAS, Intercommunity Health Centre, London Crisis Pregnancy Centre and London Abused Women Centre loaded vans, cars, and trucks and came back for more. It was estimated that this donation was valued at around $60,000.

It comes as no surprise that tears were shed and hugs were given as the diapers and paper products were distributed. For some families a month of free diapers means extra money for groceries and other necessities. For agencies such as the Women’s Community House this large gift of paper products helps keep their daily operating costs within budget as they serve their clients.

Connections Church collaborates with Kimberly Clark to receive donations three times a year assisting around 30 London agencies. This is the fifth time in the past 3 years that such large donations have been received. The next delivery will come in late September. Agencies and churches that would benefit from diapers and other paper products are asked to contact Tara at
