At Christian Life in London, we accept the responsibility of bringing our readers more information on the great work being done at the churches and by the almost 200 servant ministries in the Greater London Area. The names of many of these ministries will be familiar to you but we are answering the question: "Yes I have heard of them but what exactly do they do?"

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with Irving Augustine. Irving is the National Missions Specialist at The Navigators of Canada based here in London. Irv explained that the work of The Navigators begins with their motto, "to Know Christ and to Make Him Known".

The Navigators ministry begins: In 1933 a Navy sailor (Les Spencer) was dissatisfied with his life. So he turned to a Christian lumberyard worker (Dawson Trotman) and asked for help in sorting out his faith and life. Dawson began to meet with Les one-on-one to mentor him and before long the change in Les' life was apparent to other sailors on the ship. Dawson encouraged Les to share with the sailors what he was learning about faith and life. He did - and by the end of World War II there were men on over 1,000 ships who had been impacted by this way of personally helping others grow in their Christian faith, one sailor helping another and on to others. What a beginning! Watch a video on the history of the Navigators

Irv explained the Journey led by The Navigators: "We walk with those on their spiritual journey leading to their introduction to Jesus and the Kingdom. So often we are met by those who believe they know Him yet they are void of any relationship with Him. In time, sometimes quickly and sometimes not, our commitment to reach out delivers such bountiful results. There is a whole-life transformation that occurs as they become true, authentic followers of Jesus. We witness their lives progressively transformed into being a better son or daughter, a better father or mother, a better husband or wife, a better friend and neighbour and a better boss or employee. Then we help these great people go on to help others who then help others also."

Irv speaks of the Ministry as discipling and mentoring, referring to Matthew 9:36 - 38: 36 and Timothy 2:1,2

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Irv spoke of a number of missions taking place in developing countries established and led by missionaries from The Navigators. Each Navigators trusts God to bring together a support team that prays for them and financially supports their ministry. Irv describes the work: "This is a life-long extension of discipleship to live a life of charity to advance the Gospel of Jesus and His Kingdom where He is most needed. We often refer to this work as 'Kingdom impact!'"

Irv personally spent twelve years with his family as a missionary in Chile and in a later edition of Christian Life in London we hope to bring you stories and pictures from this wonderful experience.
