Sutherland’s Furniture has been a fixture of east London for many decades, the last two under the ownership of Gus Dupuis. Gus’ forty plus years of experience in the furniture industry shows in the unique character of this family run business and his hand has been in all aspects of it. This family touch is seen in Gus’ daughter, Vivianne, who describes the Sutherland’s difference.
“We are a high-volume store without high impact sales,” says Vivianne. “We work one customer at a time, and some of our customers visit three, four, or five times before making a purchase.”
Sutherland’s specializes mostly in furniture for the home but does office furniture as well. When possible, all furniture is from Canadian manufacturers. As well, Sutherland’s is a part of the Dufresne Retail Solutions Group, an association including over 100 independent furniture stores nationwide providing the buying power to ensure their prices are competitive with other retailers.
Sutherland’s commitment to the local community is obvious as well. Several years ago, Gus purchased the neighbouring plaza and rolling renovations have made it one of the more unique and stylish buildings on Dundas East. The employee breakroom is covered with pictures and plaques representing Sutherland’s sponsorship of local youth sports, and they’re proud of their draw in which a newcomer family was presented with $10,000 to help them start a new life.
As a company Sutherland’s wants those in the market for new furniture to have a fun experience, and they go out of their way to make the customers feel important. Often customers make purchases they didn’t intend to, or they purchase something different than they intended.
“I try to listen to what people actually want, as opposed to what they are asking for,” explains Vivianne. “My favorite question to a perspective customer is, ‘What do you do in this room?’ Taking the time to discuss this helps us to help them better.”
Sutherland’s under Gus’ ownership is now seeing its third generation of family members come through the doors to purchase furniture. While Sutherland’s is built on service rather than slogans, the philosophy can be summed up in this way: If you like the experience and you’re happy with the product you’ll buy from Sutherlands.
